We are convinced that sustainability is the key to our future – for our company, our society, and our environment. Promoting sustainable development is a core part of our corporate purpose.
It is important to us to offer products that set standards in both quality and sustainability. Therefore, we continuously develop our specialty papers and nonwovens to meet the highest sustainability requirements. At the same time, we aim to reduce our ecological footprint as well as that of our suppliers step by step.
The production of paper consumes large amounts of water and energy and generates significant CO2 emissions. We have already made substantial progress in this area in recent years and will continue on this path.Additionally, we feel a strong sense of social responsibility. We support our region through various initiatives, striving for intact social and ecological systems. We also want our employees to feel comfortable and proud to work for us.
Neu Kaliss Spezialpapier has been offering FSC-certified® products since 2017. In this way, we contribute to sustainable and environmentally friendly forest management. As this is a supply chain certification, we also influence the sustainability of our suppliers.
FSC-Mix® stands for products that use materials from FSC-certified forests, recycled materials, and materials from controlled sources (controlled wood). In addition to the exclusion of illegal wood, FSC-Controlled Wood® also takes into account key social and ecological aspects.
Our specialty papers sometimes contain plastics or polyester fibers. We want to steadily increase the proportion of recycled plastics in our products in the coming years.
With our ecological nonwovens and specialty papers, we already offer our customers products that meet high sustainability requirements: They are free of plastics and are made from renewable and compostable raw materials.
For our wallpaper nonwovens, we have received certification according to Oeko-Tex® Standard 100, the world's best-known label for textiles tested for harmful substances. Our raw wallpaper nonwovens were tested for a total of 100 harmful substances, optical brighteners, and various other ecologically questionable factors.
The production of nonwovens and special papers requires a lot of water and energy. For many years, we have therefore strived to produce as resource-efficiently as possible. We have had our energy management certified according to ISO 50001.
Through efficient plants and innovative technologies, we have already made great progress in reducing our ecological footprint. We will take advantage of the opportunities that arise for us in the future as a result of technological and organizational developments. In addition, we want to make greater use of renewable energies.
We also see an important lever in the training and commitment of our employees. For example, as part of our company suggestion scheme, we reward concrete ideas and suggestions for improving water and energy savings.
As a member of the Melitta Group, we have the following Group-wide goals:
By 2025, we will achieve climate neutrality for all emissions caused by the Melitta Group itself, e.g. through the burning of fossil fuels (Scope 1); as well as for all emissions caused by the energy purchased by the Melitta Group, e.g. electricity (Scope 2).
By 2030, we will achieve climate neutrality for all emissions caused by transports directly caused or directly commissioned by us, as well as in Scope 3 mobility.
By 2045, we will achieve climate neutrality for all emissions caused by purchased inputs and services from third parties (Scope 3).
We are currently measuring our CO2 footprint both with regard to our entire plant and with regard to logistics. In addition, we carry out an assessment of the CO2 emissions of individual products. The data and facts obtained form the basis for reducing CO2 emissions with appropriate measures and achieving the above-mentioned goals.
We feel connected to our location and our region.
We support the local schools, kindergartens and fire brigades as well as the clubs from the fields of sports and culture that are so important for social life. We are also involved in various campaigns for the preservation of the environment.
In this way, we show our attachment to the location and our commitment on site. We want to set a good example – for our employees, but also for the people in Neu Kaliß and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
